EARTHQUAKE VICTORIA – Brief received 2:23PM – Deadline 6pm News
Script and Brief:
How much damage an earthquake causes – depends on where it hits. Think of an earthquake as a big blast – the closer you are to the centre of the explosion the worse the damage.
The 1989 Newcastle quake measured 5 point 6 on the Richeter scale, less than today’s but the epicentre was only 15 kilometres from the CBD which is why we saw so much destruction – 50 thousand buildings damaged and 13 deaths.
Christchurch in 2011 was the same. Magnitude 6.3 and it struck just 10 kilometers from the city centre. More than 100 thousand buildings damaged and 185 fatalities.
Whereas today’s in Victoria – was well away from any populated area. So it does in part come down to luck. But also the geological environment.
New Zealand sits on an active plate boundary – which causes intense earthquakes. In Australia the plates instead spread apart…causing less powerful tremors. Today’s was triggered by tectonic forces pushing up the Victorian Alps.
